Artist Statement

I am from Taiwan which is at the south-east side of China and south-west side of Japan, my hometown is called Taichung, a city that is located in the middle of Taiwan just like how Kansas is. My dad is a businessman; he is a hydraulic and hydro-power engineer. My mom stays at home and does housework and my younger sister’s major is architecture. After I graduated from high school, I realized English is very important. Therefore I came to the United States.
When I was a little kid, I used to read comic books. To me comic books are more like my teacher than as entertainment. I actually learned cross-hatching from comic book, since then it becomes my favorite technique. My favorite comic book artist is Inoue Takehiko. His works are popular from earlier Slam Dunk to recent comic named Vagabond. The realistic style of cross-hatching attracted me. I am still learning from him and also other comic authors as well. For now, I will say my unique style would be realistic combined with comic book style especially on my drawing and printmaking works. I still love to use cross-hatching in modeling. My concept of art is humanity and Asian culture. For example, majority of my art relates with my culture; as an Asian, I would like to express something unique and different compared with other culture. It is a good way to promote your own culture and introduce yourself by art.
